Technical Difficulties

At the moment in our project we are having technical problems with uploading our videos (our preliminary project and the interviews we carried out on film) to our youtube account in order to display them on our blog. We hope to overcome these soon together as a group!

PLANNING IDEAS

These are some of the rough ideas that we have come up with, that fit it with our traget audience. There are some of the genric conventions of a thriller film along with some ideas of our own that are to be considered for our own final opening sequence. We are also going to limit these to a few ideas and then explain them in more depth of what and why we are using the idea.

Eerie music – wind chimes, nursery rhymes, orchestral music

Existing locations – abandoned woods, school, park, house, film in London/police station

Times of day – early morning, late at night (creepy)/dark cloudy

Costumes – regular dark clothing (more realistic)/ Halloween outfits

Props: blood/make up/ knife (at the end of the scene?)

Editing effects- jump cuts/black and white/ shadows/flashbacks

Interviews

These are the questions we have decided to use in our interview. We have used qualitative and quantitative questions so that we have a variety of answers that state why they like certain things as well as simple questions that are easy to graph. We will be filming our interviews as a group discussion so we have more in depth answers. Also we think that person to person interviews will help us in achieving accurate information from our interviewees.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 – April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, but he is best known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences. During his 40-year career he worked for some of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, including most notably Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. He created the the disjointed text that raced together and was pulled apart for Psycho, that we mentioned in the Alfred Hitchcock analysis slideshow we have made and we have included in this post. We are considering basing our own titles with inspiration from Saul Bass's work, to keep our theme of a Hitchcock-esque thriller film opening.

Audience

Graeme Burton identifies the difference between socially grouped audiences (e.g. grouped by age, gender, race, class, place in society, etc) and media grouped audiences (e.g. grouped by their relationship with the media, such as computer-game users, film-goers and so on). You will need to decide whether your target audience falls into the first or the second of the categories – or both.

Using this theory, our audience is going to be based on age, social group and their relationship with media. The certificate of our opening sequence film would be 12 to 15; therefore the age group is targeted for teenagers and above. We have particularly chosen to focus on young adults in the making of our thriller because we feel this is suited to the genre. Based on our own experiences and research we feel that the social grouping of young adults prefer thriller and horror themes. Younger people today have a stronger relationship with media than older generations because of digitalisation; the youth of today want a more diverse variety and involvement in cinema.

Thrill seekers may find this genre appealing according to Hartley's theory on 'the self' and how each member of the audience themselves play a part in box office popularity. Nation is also important to our finalised opening because we are a western society and thriller/horrors from our culture often have stereotyped features. E.g. women are usually shown as the victim in this genre. When producing our own ideas for our project, we will consider whether to have the conventional features of a typical horror/thriller film opening.

Genres We Are Considering.

We have narrowed down our film genre choice to the following:

- Horror

- Drama

- Thriller

-or a combination between these.

We have chosen these because we feel they are popular genres, but we would also enjoy making them, as well as them also being a lower budget.

A bit about us

We have decided to work together because we each bring something different to the group and we can work to each other's strengths and weaknesses. Jess is the creative member who is able to create original ideas; Sam brings the business aspect to our project, she acts as the producer of our filming and is the organiser of the group; Jordan is the writer of our group, she manages the content of the film and its script. Although we have our strengths in these areas, we are all able to contribute to each assigned role so we can all have an opportunity to develop our skills in each area of this project.
